MOVING, PACKING AND STORAGE TIPS
-
PROHIBITED STORAGE GOODS: Never store perishables,
liquids, explosives, flammable liquids and fuels, aerosol, toxic materials, or other items that need a controlled environment
-
A climate controlled unit, heated during the winter and air conditioned
in the summer, is ideal if you are storeing heat-sensitive goods such as videotapes, albums, photographs, wines, computers
and precious wood furniture
-
Place pallets on concrete floors to avoid items absorbing moisture
-
Mark each box with the name of the room that it belongs in and the contents
-
Write, "open first" on boxes of things that you might need immediately
such as bedding and dishes
-
Boxes should be filled completely and lids taped shut
-
Protect your items with paper (not newspaper), bubble pack or packing peanuts
-
Place heavy items on the bottom and lightweight items on the top.
This will prevent crushing of boxes
-
Heavy items should be packed in small boxes for easier lifting. Lightweight items
can go in larger boxes
-
Pack all items as tight as possible. Avoid leaving open space where
items can shift
-
Store fragile items wrapped and in dresser drawers
-
When packing your storage unit, create a center aisle for access to all
items
-
Store items you'll need most often at the front of the unit
-
Label boxes on all sides and keep a list for easy reference
